Not being SLIM, is not a Crime
82
Is it a crime not to be slim? Why is being fat seen as being unattractive?
There could be several reasons for being overweight:
1) Health Problems – E.g Underactive Thyroid, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, etc
2) Medicines - some medicines slow down the rate at which the body burns calories.
3) Genes – Research has found that some people’s genes make them more “metabolically efficient” than others. Also, if parents are big, sometimes the kids naturally inherit their genes and become big.
4) The birth of a baby. Its natural for a woman to put on weight during pregnancy. In most cases, she would lose the weight - gradually.
5) Over production of hormones.
6) Problems – going through a difficult time in life. (Using food as comfort).
A lot of fat people are looked at in a negative way. Examples:
- They are discriminated against. E.g In selecting people for Jobs. Also, they are not treated with respect unless they are absolutely loaded financially. (Funny how fat rich men become very attractive to people)
- Sometimes, they get “dirty” looks from people as if they came from another Planet.
- Kids – they get bullied / teased in school. In UK nearly half of school kids have been bullied over the past year. Figures based on responses of 150,000 children who took part in a Tellus survey for OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education). Fat kids are included in these figures.
- In relationships – the man or woman no longer finds the partner attractive. A lot of partners start having affairs or lose interest in marriage when their once “slim built” partner puts on weight.
Picture the Scenario - Our Society today.
It’s a scorching hot day. Some men are working on the outside of an office building. One of them, walks into an office full of Admin workers. He is wearing only a pair of jeans, no Top. He is well-built and has a “6 pack”. Turning to a group of people who are sitting in a section, he asks if anyone knows where the Soft Drinks machine is. Nearly all of the staff (I won’t mention the gender) offer to take him there.
Same day, same place, another man walks in wearing a pair of jeans with a bit of a belly and maybe what we call “man boobs”. He asks the same question to staff. Some of the staff point with their finger where he should go and give him directions. Others simply look at him and continue with what they are doing.

We can’t all be Slim.
Lets treat people the way we would like to be treated and look past their size. A lot of people are big but they are highly intelligent, talented, with great personalities and hearts of gold.
On the contrary, you could have someone with excellent body statistics, that would make you do a double-take, but once you get to know them, they can be a real pain in the backside and they no longer look attractive to you. Then you ask yourself “I wonder what I saw in him/her?”. My answer – “physical appearance”.
Help our kids - A lot of kids are chubby when they are young but tend to lose the weight before they become teenagers. Make sure they have healthy diets/exercise and feed their minds positively so they don’t lose their confidence / self esteem. Bullying is common in schools. One of the stars of “Celebrity dancing on ice 2009 – UK” program said she didn’t like her partner lifting her up in the show because when she was young someone in the family lifted her up and commented that she was very heavy. She didn’t like that comment and it has lived with her ever since. She’s now in her 40s. (one of the Nolan Sisters).
If you are naturally big. Please don’t give into society’s pressure to be slim. Love yourself and don’t hate your body. You are unique and special. Fashion wise – Lots of Fashion lines cater for plus sizes. The most important thing is to live a healthy lifestyle.
In some Countries, men actually like their partners big. Example in Africa, most men prefer their women big and robust.
Big is Beautiful.

in case of genetic fatness problem, we need to be more generous and compassionate to others.
kudos - wonderful hub. i watch so many friends struggle with body image at the hand of our cruel and unrealistic society. why can't we just love people for who they are versus what they look like!!
hi, lady_e. :-) this article brings back to memory my dear sister in-law who has a 52 inch waist. obviously, she was very big. she was an intelligent woman and defender of the causes for women. i remember her paying for two when she boarded a passenger jeep (a vehicle that transports 10-18 people from one place to another) because the driver was complaining. she had also confronted two students who laughed in front of her and asked them if they had not yet seen a fat lady. she also told them that if they hadnt, they will be taken to a place where there are many fat people. the two students were so frightened and asked their apologies. it can be said it was funny but i felt the hurt when she was telling us the story. she was so frustrated how other people discriminate fat men and women.
some people can truly be insensitive. this glorifying of sexy body and muscular features is actually influenced by advertising.
I agree, what a waste to judge people by appearance. No one has the right to rob another of dignity. What a shame that children are learning to judge others by media standards. The bullying in schools and even homes is tragic. We are seeing children committing suicide due to the inability to continue coping at being terrorized. It is a shame on society, we were made for better.
Being me and ...you saw me. I have Chronic illness and many autoimmune problems...I was always very thin! Then in 1979 I fell into a unknown reason coma. It was the lightest level of coma, but I was Given IV steroids! It changed my life. We now know that was the beginning of MS.
My family (not hubby who has that unconditional love) and friends were on me all the time about my weight to the extent that the stress was making me worse.
I have learned many things in the last 30 years;
#1. Love God
#2. Survive and Give Him the Glory
#3. People who only see the outer me are not looking close enough!
This is a world of first impressions. It is a shame that the true beauty sometimes is never seen.
Thank you for this hub! It came at one of my lows about my weight...they do not come often, still thanks again.
A very positive Hub! You are right Lady_E. Whatever way we are we need to build a positive outlook and learn to be happy from inside.
Hi,
Yes I agree. I never understood why people treat over-weight people differently. Life is hard enough and being over-weight probably makes it a little bit harder.
Physical appearance can be deceiving. I started to date this guy a few years back. He was well built, worked out a few days a week and had the best smile and legs I have ever seen. After a couple of months of dating him I found him to be a huge bore. Looks only go so far in life. Oh, bye the way I stopped dating him. Boring.
Good Hub.

This hub is really awesome. seeing my profile on here and Hub about my weight loss surgery, you can guess I am fat. I do not "candy coat" it. I am a fat woman. So what? :)
I do not presume to live life walking in your shoes, and you certainly do not live in mine is my motto.
But I will say that my choice for surgery comes as my weight I feel is affecting my "quality" of life. I am finding that it is hard or even sometimes impossible to do the things I used to. And yes, my health is a factor as well.
But all and all, I am a healthy, vibrant young woman. I love my God, my country and my life. And I want for my life to go on without restrictions from my weight issues. Thus, I have taken steps to have the surgery to correct some of the problem.
I have some medical issues which have affected me losing weight by traditional means. But I in no way am doing this for external reasons. I think I look really good, whether I have more meat on my bones or not. And my husband loves me just the way I am. Our love is not conditionally based on whether or not I am a size 2, and thank God for that! :)
Thanks for this Hub and good job with it!
hey so much insight there...... i would bore you if i told you my feelings on this subject...but i was not bored by you comments... nice hub
variety is the spice of life, we need to be excepting of all people because we don't know their battles.i know men that are not attracted to me because i am thin, as long as they are happy let it be.
Hi Lady_E, you are doing a great service with this article. People need to live and let live, and understand people come in all sizes and people are beautiful in different ways! Kartika
Wonderful!! I've always been big. Thankkfully, I met a great man who has always liked big women! We're still together after 20+ years.
What a great Hub Lady_E! This really calls out key points that I believe a lot of people do not understand or fail to think about. People that are fat, are still people, and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
As a certified personal trainer, I have run across this issue many times. It is very hard to hit a balance in the psychology of weight. People run the spectrum from morbid obesity to severe anorexia and in the end they are equally unhealthy with similar results debilitating illness and in extreme cases death. I think the ultimate ideal should be **health**, not image. If you are healthy, your heart and lungs are in good working order, and you can run jump, and play with your kids, then you are just fine no matter what your size. I don't let my clients get on a scale. I measure body fat percentage and keep an I eye on heart rate endurance. In any case, great hub and I hope it's a sign that the attitudes of society are progressing, I'm tired of clients telling me that they want to look "skinnier".
lady e....
let me start off by saying I actually have seen both sides of this coin personaly. Growing up I was over weight till my early twenty's... I was teased, picked on(even by my siblings and mother), and by classmates/adults alike. The way I felt about myself and my weight was horrible and ugly.. after 'battling the diet buldge' for years, while in college I decided I was sick of worrying about what everyone else thought of me and I had to find and like myself! I discovered that despite what I had been told/called in the past it's up to me whether or not it's true, but by being true/real with myself I can be happy with me! By feeling better about myself I became comfortable in my own skin... thus, went out more, did more things, becoming more active and happy, and before I knew it I lost all the weight I had punished myself for years over! From a size 16 to a size 5/6!!
now, as I said before, there are 2 sides to this coin... You would think that after I lost all my weight I shouldn't have any more issues right? Wrong... but, my issues were in the way people view me now. When I was heavier it seems that the friends and lovers I had were more 'down-to-earth' and real. They loved me 4 me reguardless what I looked like! The guys that approach me now seem more fake/superficial and more conserned about self-image and wrapped up in society's take on what's attractive and what's not. Rather than who I am as a person and what I'm all about.
Hello!
You have some good articles! Thanks!
I just became your fan.
I just joined here 2 weeks ago. And I love it here!
Be Blessed.
hope you fan me too
Lady_E I love your hubs. You don't know this but as a young man I worked in a gym and for ten years was buff.People treated me a certain way, then as time went on,marriage work ,poor habits I blew up like a balloon, I am only 5'6 and last year this time I was 250lbs. People treated me different, not bad cause I carry myself well,I am currently 193lbs and working my way down to 175lbs which is my right size. You have to be healthy. I almost died in July of this year with heart disease. We need not to worry about what people think but what we know, life is short and we should trat our body's right.Thank you for a great read.

Totally agre that people should be tread as peole regardless of their size. I used to be obese and know too well how others can be. That really shouldn't happen.
If Fat is not a health or mobility issue for them, then it is personal preference how they look when fat.
Thank you Lady_E. It's nice to know there is someone out there who thinks we can be good even heavy. I believe as long as your health is good and you feel good about yourself that is what matters most. I have crossed the line and am doing something about it but know I will never be a size 2.
nicelly written, being fat has never been a crime ,as for ilove fat women
I believe like you, but what about big over weight?
i can totally relate to this hub! LOL!
Great Hub Lady E, women should be proud of their curves!
The crime is really with the producers and farmers of these foods by throwing chemicals, high fructose corn syrup (fake sugars) and estrogens to plump us up like the chickens, cows, veggies, fruits they have on sale at the market.
I do think a person needs to take personal responsibility to correct themselves when more than 50 lbs or more overweight ( I prefer 20 lbs as a correction point). By saying you have big bones or it's genetics is just another blame game.
Being fat is not a crime - 20 to 50 lbs; but being obese is like c'mon you need help right away. Change your diet or have weight loss doctor. I am guilty of liking all the foods overweight people like too but there has to be self-control and line drawn. There are numerous irrefutable reports that this rate of obesity cannot be sustained economically. BTW, I am not perfect either & do have friends of all sizes and offer advice when asked. I hope not to offend people. I just know that if that same junk food had less or zero bad chemicals we'd all be better off.
I love my curves and this article just helped my confidence even more. Thanks!
Whenever I get time I read some of Lady_E's hubs. That sensibility you nurture is really disarming. Here again you are shedding light on a very great issue. You see, each entity is born with a different constitution and configuration from others. That is the designer's or creators(nature's)purpose. Here in our human society, ignoring this fundamental principle of 'bio-diversity', everyone tries to follow the difficult general prescription of being "slim" and hence all the confusions.
Great page here. I've been overweight for most of my life, since the age of 5! I was bullied and teased throughout most of my child hood. I suffer from severe depression and have just recently in the last few years began working on building myself back up after being pushed down for so many years.
Great article Lady_E, nice to see positive blogs about fat people, the war on obesity is damaging more and more people's lives in the name of health.
Please read my hub pages and tell me what you think.
All the best
Tima
I do not know why my first comment was not accepted,I am trying again, just wanted to thank you for your positive views and support of diversity, thin does not mean 100% healthy, nor does being fat mean less than human, worthless, gluttons, health is not a size. naming and shaming fat people as you said will only lead to more misery, low self esteem and of course more weight.
All the Best
Tima
we need to be more generous and compassionate to others
You cannot judge a book from its cover, its what is inside that counts...however there are different degrees of fatness. Being real heavy is not at all healthy and will cause a lot of problems.
I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. many women who were average size think they are fat and then start to diet. Then they end up gaining back everything they lost and then some. They would have been better off never being on a diet in the first place.
obesity is a complicated and serious problem. I would think by now they would have a leptin based medication for the general population.
America is getting so fat and out of shape that we will be spending billions of dollars a year just on diabetes. There has to be an effective diet pill somewhere!
Another thought provoking hub Lady_E thank you so much.
While being too fat isnt okay, those that are slightly on the heavier side need not worry!! Key to being disease free is often a mind game .. depends largely on your psychology and mental strength!! Never feel guilty unnecessarily!!
A very practical hub on a relevant issue!!
Shukria!!
Lady_E What an excellent hub you have written. It is certainly true not all of us can be slim. Beautiful job!
I have been fat most of my life and now I am trying to eat right so that I can be healthier. I have never been ridiculed or picked on because of my weight, so I haven't had to deal with that too much. However, when I look at myself, I think it is unbelievable what I have let myself become. In making the change to eating healthy foods, I have begun to change in ways that are surprising and positive. Thanks for the hub that inspires us to think about this issue and what we can do for ourselves.
Well said! It's not easy to lose weight, and there are often underlying medical conditions.
Great hub! What's sad is that "normal" weight women aren't as desired as underweight "skinny" women. We should be concentrating on happiness and health rather than looks so much, but I doubt that will ever change. If someone is happy being overweight then who am I to tell them to change. Once and for all - Skinny does not equal healthy!!!!!!!!!!! I just started taking meds for an illness and I can't exercise either. The meds cause weight gain so I do know how people become overweight. Luckily I've only gained 5 extra pounds in the almost year I've taken it- most people gain 20 lbs. We can't judge fat people for sure!
This is one of our favourite themes - the pressure that people (Women especially) have to be thin all the time.
We even think that the present style of wearing tight-fitting clothes during pregnancy is part of the 'thin' trend.
This is an excellent hub. We have a hub called 'Skinny models, diets and unhappy women' and we are adding a link from our hub to yours. Hope that is okay.
YOU said it! Was skinny all my life and couldn't stand it. A little on the bod is fine.
Great post, and need more that encourage folks to be who they are. at 64 I would be bagging and saggin' a little too much if I were to get back to a size 10. I'm happy, and my doctor makes sure I'm healthy. And most of all, I'm content with me. The 30 lbs ofweight I've lost has been to keep me from the diabetic and heart problem tendencies that run in my family. I want to be here for a long time, not skinny - but healthy. Thanks
I just hope that those who stuggle with their weight for whatever reason, maintain a positive self image. We all have 'something' we need to work on even if for different reasons. Voted-up/rated.
You know what, I really like this hub so much because of the message that can be sent across many teenagers out there whom are perhaps suffering from dealing with their weight issues and stuff like that. The world is not about being slim all the time and there are other healthy ways of embracing weight issues for both boys and girls, men and women alike. What a great hub.
Wow so many comments!!what shall i write more, this article is really very wonderful and give a very good knowladge to all ages specially to teenagers who worry a lot about their figure!!!
Lack of sleep throws your metabolism off.
Also, dehydration results in your body not only storing extra fat (same as starving yourself), but also tricks your body into thinking your hungry (it only thinks to ingest something).
I had a burgular scare in November and haven't slept properly since; I have been wide awake till sun rise, skip breakfast, often sleep through lunch; resulting in me snacking in the late afternoon to stay conscious (I have low blood pressure), then cooking dinner.
I gained 3 stone bytime February.
Lady E. Fat is not good for you. I know that if I was fat, I would be hotter (temperature wise, haha) and have less energy. However, I had an aquaintance who was quite a hefty gal. She, getting older, decided to lose weight and did lose quite a lot. She really slimmed down. She looked awful. A year or two later, I saw her again, back to her chubby self and was, once again, the beautiful woman I remembered.
Thank you for writing about this subject. You offer lots of insight. Keep Writing!
nicely written and well presented hub. A person can be fat due to a number of reasons as you wrote, but I think more than 50% of them is fat due to eating more than they can lift!!
Nice hub, a different take on the fat issue. But the problems related to obesity can't be ignored.
Lady E, Nice thought provoking hub! You have well presented some interesting examples. Discrimination comes in so many forms... I think it is important to be mindful as to how we treat others regardless of their size.
What is imporant is to encouraging being healthy! We all have room for improvement...
Thank you for sharing, In His, Love, Peace & Blessings!
Great Hub lady_E,
I understand that its harder for other people to maintain weight because of genetics and other factors. However, I also think that there are lots of people that would be much healthier if they had a more active lifestyle - Such as taking a 30 minute walk in the morning and avoiding fast food.
In an age like today, its hard to really keep a healthy balanced diet. So many foods are processed and if you tend to eat out frequently, you never know how many calories your eating. I think the most important thing is to try to incorporate 5 fruits in your diet daily, 5 vegetables daily and drink at least 64 ounces of water everyday. Most americans do not follow those simple guidelines.
This is a great hub, thank you much for doing this one. This is a subject that is all to not dealt with most of the time. great job. my fingers working on them buttons up there! :D aloha
Nice points, but it's not black and white. People think there is skinny or fat, but it's not a choice of two scenarios.
You can be fat and strong, like an NFL lineman or a powerlifter. These guys (or gals!) carry a lot of fatty tissue, but have a lot of muscle mass underneath so are still healthy.
Then there is fat and weak. This is the PROBLEM people. These people live sedentary lifestyles with virtually 0% exercise, and eat unhealthy foods. These people will have tons of health problems and probably will not live very long. Good examples are people on The Biggest Loser.
Next we have skinny weak people. Again, this is unhealthy too. This includes runway models, and people with disorders such as anorexia. They look like skeletons covered by a layer of skin. Not good!
Finally, there are "jacked" people. People who have a good amount of muscle mass, and relatively low fat levels. There are people like fitness models, bodybuilders, professional tennis, soccer, and basketball players, etc.
So train hard and eat healthy! That's the way to go if you want to be a part of that fourth group. If I can do it, anybody can!
Cheers.
Hi Lady_E, I decided to stop by again. I haven't been on hubpages for a while. I can relate to just about everything that you have written in your article.
I just watched a medical talk show that is now popular in the USA last week. There was a nutritionist on that made the comment, "Don't associate being skinny with being healthy." I am about 15 pounds over-weight and I can tell you that I received A LOT more attention when I was skinny that what I do now that I am a little bit chubby. I am physically fit and I do work out and exercise occasionally. I am no longer obsessed with being "skinny."
Excellent article. Thanks for the reminder and putting things into perspective.
Hi lady_e i like fat people as most of times i find fat people good natured and jolly.. unless someone is calling them fat or making fun of them, they are less mean than the super fit persons. This is my own thinking..i dont know if it is fact or not..but in my experience it is fact.
This is something that I’ve always thought about. When Darwin discovered evolution and saw that nature was constantly changing to improve itself. The animals, insects, and other wildlife would adapt to the changes of how the earth was evolving. Back in the 1940s and fifties we have an abundance of good food but was not being genetically altered and we were getting the daily nutrition that we needed. I feel that because governments are tampering with our Food Supply that mother nature is changing us. One of the main reasons why I feel there’s so many overweight people in the world is that there’s going to be a food shortage somewhere in the near future. And the people that are overweight in the world are going to be the strong ones to survive. I really do think that mother nature is changing the human body to help us survive.
Lady_E
Great Hub. I wish we could all quit judging. Let's be happy and live in harmony.
Everyone is beautiful in their own way. God made us all. To get along with people is to respect God for his creations. These are just a small few of my feelings. God Bless You. Wonderful Hub.
...totally loving it.
Lady E... is that ur real pic? u don't look oversized.. anyway, i love ur post.. it's just hard that even my mom and brother despised me for my size.. im a bit overweight.. i know they are just concerned with my body, however it is very hard to lose weight.. well i am losing now but it takes time and effort really.. tnx for the support :-)
Yes, people must not be judged by their appearances only, whether they are fat or extra slim. It depends on the body type and there are many medical factors which may lead to obessity and overweight. These have been stated very logically here. But only one thing should be kept in mind : being obesse or overweight may lead to various other diseases which may turn fatal. The bulky Sumo Wrestlers of Japan, in most of the cases die very early. So these factors should be taken care of and obessity must be brought under control through proper exercise and diet. It should be done not for any other reasons, but for minimising the problems which may be caused due to obessity or to take care of the diseases leading to obessity.
Its quite true that all of us must not get slim. Its not possible also. Whether you will be slim or fat also depend on your body type and various medical reasons as stated very well in this article. But only one thing should be kept in mind. Being overweight and to fatty may lead to fatal diseases and and further aggravate your medical problem. So, it should be kept under control aty least through exercises and proper diet. Otherwise any person should be judged by the personality, not by looks only.
This is such a beautiful hub. Im so glad I came across this one. Very much true, everything that is said here. Fat people are given such a disrespect from the society which is like so sick and bad. One must respect everyone.
I think you've really articulated something here that is important for everyone: fat or not. Thanks.
Love your statement,"Let's treat people the way we would like to be treated and look past their size."
I love this hub. I think beauty comes from within. I know that I would rather see some overweight people who are staying as healthy as they can. And have their thyroid problem or other health reasons under control. My sister was overweight. She was the most beautiful spirit. Loving and loyal. Great subject. I voted up! :) Blessings and take care
Everyone has feelings, regardless of size and build. You hit the nail on the head when you said "treat others like you would like to be treated yourself." Very thought provoking hub which everyone should read. I was at a fashion show last week and all the models were age 14+ which made a nice change from the usual stick thin models that are normally used. Great article. Voted up and awesome.
I'm a large sized woman and it's nice to read posts like this.

People should watch there diets for health reasons. As for others things; they are mainly the work of marketeers that need to sell of the products related to beauty and diet. Dawn and Oprah looks just fine to me.
