Delicious Delicacies: Do you know what you eat abroad?
It’s a wonderful thing to travel round the world. A lot of tourists are so friendly and are fortunate to meet friendly people in countries they travel to. Some even eat the food without really finding out what it is because it “smells nice”. Always, know what goodies are being served to you or you could be eating any of the following.
.
First on the Menu – Silk Worms
I guess this is easy to spot even without your glasses. Silk worms is the main ingredient in a very popular dish in Korea. It used to be made with rotten baby worms, but now they use fresh dead male worms, which are fried in oil. I’m not sure if they are crunchy. Let me know if they are, if ever you are brave enough to eat some, but don’t bring any back for me.

Bull's Testicles ready for Frying
Second on the Menu – Bull’s Testicles
There is a place called Moldova (a small post-Soviet country located between Ukraine and Romania) that eats this. They are deep fried and called “Rocky Mountain Oysters”. So, if you are on holiday and the waitress mentions Oysters, remember it might not be real oysters but Bulls Balls.. There is also lamb and pig testicles which are popular for snacking. Mmmmh... Yummy and you can wash it down with a glass of wine.
Fried Rats
Third on the Menu – Rats
(Oh, you should see the look on my face as I type this bit) According to the research I did, rats were eaten in some countries due to starvation as was the case in North Korea. The ancient Romans used to eat it and some European Countries still do - definitely not in United Kingdom.. Then it became a delicacy. I honestly think people just use the word “delicacy” to make the food sound classy and easy to go down.
Shark Fin Soup
Fourth on the Menu - Sharks
Sharks are rich in oil. People practice shark finning, where fishermen slice off the fins of live sharks before throwing them back in the water to drown. The fins are dried and used to make soup in restaurants. Demand for shark fin soup has boomed in Asia - very popular on Wedding Menus. Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, A Campaign to ban shark fin soup is not having much influence on consumers of the popular dish, according to restaurant owners. However, I noticed a new campaign was launched last month, June 2011 in Taiwan called "Love Shark". Maybe, that will make a difference.
Poor Cat...
Finally, Dogs and Cats
There is a place in Africa that I hear eats dogs but the only dogs I have eaten are Hotdogs in bread. People in Vietnam enjoy eating dogs and cats. I have to admit it’s upsetting the way they kill them for food but you know what they say “one man’s meat is another man’s poison”

There are many more animals people eat – Elephants, Gorilla’s Turtles, Rabbits but I don’t want to post any more photo’s or go on about it, so that you don’t leave my hub with a bad taste in your mouth.
Wishing you “Bon Appetit” for when you go on holidays. (◕‿◕)
