Fear of Roller Coaster Rides
75The spring weather is really getting to me, in a positive way. My last Hub was about Flowers -The stars of the earth. I guess this time of the year spring/summer brings out the outdoor adventure side of us. I would love to visit a Theme park with friends this summer but I am a little hesitant.
When I was about 8, mum and dad took me to one and I remember the merry go round was a bit high up. I recall so well, as it started going round and round all the kids were squealing in delight. “yah” etc. I think I was the only one crying on it saying “I wanna get off”. I still remember those words. Mum and Dad smiled and waved to me each time I whirled past them. They didn't hear me.
Batman - The Ride
Then in the 90s, when I lived in Liverpool. My brother came to visit so we went to Blackpool Leisure Theme Park. We went on one ride and at a point I thought, “Bugger, when will this stop spinning? Is there a stop button?" Finally, it stopped – we both got off, looked at each other and at the same time, we shook our heads and said “Never again!!” then burst out laughing.
That was over a decade ago and I would really love to go to another Theme park but my goodness, those rides that take you to the top and suddenly dip so low, still scare me. I feel, something might happen to my brain and then I start remembering that scary film Final Destination where they were falling off the ride. I always say to people “Feel the Fear and do it anyway” but this quote doesn’t seem to be working for me. It’s more like “Feel the Fear and leg it anyway” (“Leg it” is a Slang for “run for it”). On the other hand, I am fascinated by the rides.

If you are in the same boat as me. Here are some Tips and useful information that I found.
- A lot of testing is done before a roller coaster is opened to the public to ensure safety.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking to ride, to mostly eliminate the risk of throwing up.
- Check your blood pressure before you take such rides, as a precaution. Especially if you have blood pressure problems.
- Follow the Safety warnings given to you.
- Ride small roller coasters and progress slowly to bigger and faster ones
- When choosing a seat for the first time, pick the middle. The forward seats have the view that you might not be ready for; the rear seats get the upward "kick" from the coaster as it passes over the top of a hill.
- When going down a drop, take a deep breath, hold it and crunch your stomach lightly to lessen butterflies. (I would like to add, remember to start breathing again).
- Ride with a less Nervous friend. (that means, no one will be sitting by me!)

9. If you are nervous, it is okay to scream. You will not be the only one.
10. Roller coasters aren't very long. If you hate it, it will be over in a few seconds! (Yeah, right!)
11. Roller coasters look much scary than they really are .
This one really takes the biscuit:
12. Once the ride is over, don't walk out of there acting like you just went through hell. You don't want to scare other people. Open your mouth a bit like you've gone on the best thrill of your life, and fix your hair as soon as you enter the general public. Don't forget to smile!
What!? So, they want me to look Cool, Calm and Collected after the ride. I promise you, my hair will be like Don Kings’ when I get off the ride.
If I manage to pluck up the courage to ride one or two, I will update you. Meanwhile, it would be interesting to know the Roller Coasters you have been on and came off “smiling”.

Hi Elena. I share your fear of roller coasters, and most of them I will not get near. I can handle the tamer rides, but those things that go 40 stories high and then drop you in 1.5 seconds aren't for me.
There is a young boy I take to a place called "Worlds of Fun" in Kansas City each summer. He is about 40 years younger than I am, and as he gets old enough to want to ride the more adventurous rides, well--I get old enough to no longer want to ride them. His favorite is this beast called the "Boomerang" and I don't really think I can handle it any longer. It has a sideways turn that is hard on my neck. I guess we'll see what happens.
Hope you manage to get to the theme park this summer--except for the roller coasters, I really love them!
Mike
Elena, I am in the same boat as you are .. Lol!! Why go for unnecessary peril when you have the choice to be closer to Mother Earth!! I would rather sit with a pepsi and watch others sway on that coaster!! The Ropeways and Cablecars on the Himalayas are often too daunting for the chicken hearted!! Never advise you that for your Indian itenary!! Ha ha ha .. :)
Nothing will ever get me into that -- not even near it.
The first time i was in a Marery go round was sometime in the 80s when Dad took me to Polo park, (that is in Nigeria), but the experience was more than what my innocent heart could handle then, the tears and shock are still in me so Elena dear, roller Coaster especially this Japan type....
Lai Lia oo mionife............(dats Yoruba word)
I like the batman. But it's been a while since I have ridden any rides at all. I think the desire to ride is less and less - not that it was ever great.
I'm with you--well, actually I'm worse--I'm terrified of roller coasters. My heart jumps out and I'm left blue and totally spent. Why go on one to torture myself? Enjoyed the hub and kudos to those who wish to overcome their fear.
I'm totally opposite, Lady E. When it comes to roller coasters, I won't ride until I can have the front seat. And, believe it or not, I'm terrified of heights (go figure)! Screaming is definitely a MUST (no swearing, please). If I go to a Theme park, I won't leave before I ride all the coasters. OK, call me crazy! Great Hub, Lady E.
Welcome to the club called "NO RC FOR ME PLEASE"
roller coasters rock :)
Rollercoasters are safer than flying, and you're a lot higher when you're flying. Could it be the unknown effect of the forthcoming physical and mental effects of the swift drops and high crests that people mistake as fear thus making them reluctant to ride the "big ones"?
I think they should screen people before the rides asking if they are likely to vomit or not and put all the vomiters at the back so the non-vomiters don't have to sit behind them.LOL
Lady_E, these tips are lost on me,LOL, because I rode my last roller coaster about 35 years ago. But this is an excellent hub, as usual.
I guess that your interest in the rides will override the fear-sure hope so, my friend!
Much Luck~

Haha, I definitely had to vote funny and vote up for this Hub. I have to say that I DESPISE rollercoasters. The first time I went on a rollercoaster, my mum had to hold me tight to prevent me from falling through the sides. There were no seat belts, just some ruddy bar thing.
So now I'm too frightened to get near rollercoasters but I can handle all the water rides so I'm not entirely opposed to theme parks.
Whoo-hooo! No roller coasters for me. Been on them a couple of times at Boblo Island (now closed for years) and at Cedar Point (because I thought my 'Boblo' fear was gone), well it was not and I still tried again (the last time I could hardly breathe and my heart was pounding). So now I'm done with it. I went on a class field trip with my daughter to Michigan Adventures last year and thank goodness she had her classmates with her (and a brave teacher) to enjoy the roller-coaster with (I just could not do it). She had a great time, she loves them, and so does my son. I will get on some rides though, the Caterpillar is my fav some parks call it the octopus. Voted-up/rated!
What a fun Hub! I adore roller coasters. The only ride I ever couldn't stand was the "Demon Drop" - I believe that's at Cedar Point. It's just a straight down drop and the feeling of having no control over that was just petrifying to me.
The last time I was on a roller coaster was in 1975! No more for me, lol, but I do love the fast, fast, water rides!!!! Woo Hoo!!!! Fun Hub!!! Much love!!!
I am still at my young ages when it comes to riding a roller coaster.I checked out your last two hubs-your suggestions about women giving naked poses are awesome. Ialways feel that how a woman will feel if there nude pose pics fall into the hands of their kids- I can't imagine the consequence of this situation. Thank you so much :)
Oh how I have always been scared of roller coasters. . .funny that my daughter says the bigger the better . .when she would go on one I could barely look up at it. and then a few years ago . .we were at Disneyworld and we got separated from our friends . when I found myself on a line for the 'Rockin Rollercoaster' she begged me the whole time on that line. . to go on with her. . sure enough she found out it was 103 seconds long. .. so with my eyes squeezed as tight as possible I made it through . .it also helped that this roller coaster was in the dark . .best part of the story is that I actually loved it and we went on it almost a 12 times after, , she was so proud of me. . but that is as far as rollercoasters go for me, , I am still petrified!!
Great Hub!!
Just looking at the pics made my feet and legs tingle - I have a terrible fear of heights. You did a great job with this! Thumbs up!

Lady E, Delightful hub! I think that you can have fun at the amusement park and enjoy your friends! Everyone is different the idea is to have fun and ENJOY! If a rollercoaster is not your "cup of tea" don't fret!
There is a pleaseurable rush of fear that takes place riding a roller coaster; for some? Kind of like being on the brink of danger... In general they are safe. But personally you are reluctant. You have the opposite experience? You can try one again and your fear or phobia could go away! Close your eyes and imagine soaring or something? (Although you may come out looking like Don King) LOL! Facing your fear to conquer it in a sense? Try one again if you like! Remember there are plenty other rides that you can try as well and ENJOY with your friends! So be you! Either way have a Great Time!
By the way Wonderful tips.... Let us know how it goes? Great hub! Thank you for sharing, much love, Peace & Blessings!
