World Cup South Africa – Here I come…
Well, with my remote control and Television. Thank goodness for Technology, most of us are enjoying it from the comfort of our homes or a big screen somewhere else or at work on the Internet. (Ha!) You know who you are.
Now, we ladies don’t know much about football. (or should I speak for myself). There’s a few things I have observed in South Africa World Cup 2010, that I’m actually seeing for the first time even though I do watch football some times.
1) I’ve noticed, players push each other when tackling and when the person they have pushed falls, they put their hands up, as if to say “it wasn’t me” or “ I didn’t touch him” (Example, the gesture below). Why do they put their hands up?
.
2) There is a constant noise in the South Africa Stadium – it sounds like a continuous swarm of bees. My friends say it’s the South African Horn. I don’t know how players manage to concentrate through that noise.
3) It’s interesting to see the way the Managers have all learnt “sign language” to communicate to their team while they are playing live. They are so intense with it, sometimes I can’t help but laugh.
4) Just noticed there are actually 2 referees in all games. Were there two in the games for the last World cup or have I suddenly got improved vision in my eyes?
5) When the players come out they all hold a child (O.K, I this I see in every game) but I think - what if in one game, a child let go of the Footballers hand and had a little run round the stadium for a good 5, 10 mins and it delayed the match a bit.
The South African Horn
Finally, I like the look of the World cup Footballs. I have been wondering if anything special is done with them after each Game. Do they throw them away or use them again? If you know what is done with World cup footballs, please let me know in the comments box. I’m just curious.
I hope you all continue to enjoy the Football World Cup season and may the Best Team win.

I'm really confused about the rules, but am totally addicted. The matches are on ESPN in the early afternoon and it's so distracting (when you're trying to work). But, I can't turn it off! And, this is only the first round!!! What's a sportsaholic to do? :( Ciao!
I'm not as sure what the "two hands up" means in World Cup circles. In American sports, it is usually a "Who, me?" gesture, indicating shock that an official would accuse the player of any type of foul. A variation would be to look toward the heavens in a "Why me, Lord?" type of sign. They will then shake their head at the weight of their burdens.
Sports are quite addictive, aren't they? I discovered this when I was twelve. I'm a spectator now rather than a participant, but I still appreciate sports a great deal.
Hope you continue to enjoy the World Cup.

Lady E, Nice hub! You have presented some interesting questions? I am sure by the end of the season you will have even more! I must say that is a great looking ball! ENJOY!
Thank you for sharing, Peace & Blessings!
This is the first time that I've ever paid attention to "Football," not American. And I also heard that sound, and it was commented on by sportscasters. But a tournament lasting a month, WOW! Anyway Lady_E very good hub.
I think 'two hands up'is sign of accepting that some thing has gone wrong but that wasn't intentional,so just don't bring a card out,any color wont be good here.
This is cute. Reminds me of the time I took a date to a pro football game and it was her first time seeing the game in real life. During TV commercial breaks the players have to stand around and wait, and it took her a minute to figure out what was going on. She also discovered football players cuss an awful lot and the actual game dynamics are a lot faster in real life than televised.
Love this hub. Keep them coming.
Thanks for your interest in football game. If you want to know more about football you please go through my article “World Unity and World Cup"(FIFA).
That's too funny! Thanks!
Great observation. I've been noticing this strange sound of "swarm of bees" in every match, but not knowing that those are from South African Horns-surly this world cup giving SA horns a great exposure.Your picture selection and positioning are awesome.thanks :)
The South African horn you refer to is called a Vuvuzela. Luckily it causes great pain to the lips if used for a prolonged time by the "musician".
Unfortunately there are approximately 60 000 or more lips, taking turns to create the tune.
You only see the stadiums. Here we actually have notices in the shopping malls, warning the use of Vuvuzelas in the building is a offence.
The fever runs high, so we tolerate the noise with a good spirit.
I am gald I am not the only "ignorant and uninformed" about the game.
Take care and great hub. Upped it for this.
Someone mentioned somewhere we have something to be gratefull for. It could have been 60 000 bagpipes! Imagine that!!! lol
Wonderful hub. Rather vuvuzelas than bad language chants. No you can't have those World Cup footballs.
Awesome Hub! Soccer is my favorite. As a Soccer mom with a college Soccer player, I'd have to say I still don't understand everything, but I do love watching it, trudging through the fields on week-end long tournaments and watching the strategy and on going action this sport provides.
Hi Lady
Hi Lady_E, I think the hands up gesture is a vain attempt to appeal to the ref's sense of brotherly forgiveness. Forget it, on the pitch he is judge, jury and executioner. My telly has just given up the ghost, so I'm suffering World Cup withdrawal symptoms at the moment. Thanks for a great hub.
I am not really into watching sports. But, I enjoyed reading this hub! Hope you learn all you want to know, and more.Vote-up/rated!
Like you I do not understand this game, but I am a girl that definitely likes to watch sports. . and I must say I loved this Hub and had a good laugh reading it! A buzz of bees. . what is up with that? It is the most droning noise I have ever heard. . Normally I would have shut the sound down but I dont understand the game enough ;) Thumbs up :) and funny:)))
Awesome hub. Since the World Cup is coming to an end, reading this hub gives me a fresh memory of what has been going on so far. It has been a good one up till now and hopefully it ends well too. The African horn is something to take note of. ;) Good hub here, Lady_E.
Watcha Lady_E,
you should be called Jane then the Rolling Stones come into play:-) sorry, anyway, two referees?, there are four officials: one ref, 2 linesmen, one fourth official, you must have been at the gin bottle, seeing double on the field:-)
The final was abysmal, the film they showed afterwards, Bend it Like Beckham, was better.
Interesting, amusing and well written.
best
Mick
Would you read "Doc Snow's" hub "Global Warming, science and wars" .. Its fabulous!!
Hi Lady_E. I'm from South Africa and I enjoyed watching the World Cup Soccer, although my team(s) didn't go through.
I was laughing at your South African horn...it's called a vuvuzella and yes, it sounded like bees. Didn't really like that sound at all, that's why I didn't go and watch one single game at a stadium, but rather stayed at home and watching it from there. I like your hub, go well.
I stormed into this today while circling in the site and simply wanted to use this opportunity to say Thank you South Africa! Proudly African!

Ha ha .. So you have caught the football fever too!! I am glued to the television and somewhat less on hub pages!! Right now seeing the Spain - Switzerland match!!
Just a point to make .. There is only one referee who is assisted by two linesman on the two flanks and the fourth referee for effecting substitution etc. You must have taken one of these linesman to be another referee!!
Enjoy the football festival!! :)
