Music – Healing and Soothing the Soul
76
Can you imagine a world without music? I think it would be dull and leave a large hole. We’d probably have a feeling that something was missing. Like most people, I enjoy music and here are some things I have discovered about it.
☆♥•*
- It uplifts the spirit – can put you in happy or lighter mood immediately.
- Music can heal – It's used as an effective therapy making a connection with people whose brains have shut down. More
- It get's rid of boredom. Example listening to music while on a long flight or on the train and it makes it a pleasant journey too.
- Music brings back memories that can either make you smile or a bit teary. It’s strange how you hear a song and it brings back memories of a relationship or makes your remember a certain person / situation. “Dance with my Father Again” – Luther Vandross always makes me miss my Dad and recall lots of memories.

(Lyrics)
Mariah “Through the Rain”
"I can make it through the rain, I can stand up once again
On my own and I know that I'm strong enough to mend
and everytime I feel afraid, I hold tighter to my faith
and live one more day and I make though the rain".
- Music can be good exercise. Dancing can definitely shift a few pounds.
- It can help you see the other side of people. Example, at Christmas parties – particularly all the Big Bosses in companies and you think to yourself “well. I never knew the CEO could really boogie.” It’s nice to see them let their hair down.
- Music can inspire – some lyrics are so touching. One of my favourites would be Mariah Carey (I can make it through the rain) or Lee Anne Womack (I hope you dance). Phil Perry (In the Morning – Father’s Lullaby)
(Lyrics)
Phil Perry “In the morning”
"Without a warning, life lets a storm in, don’t be afraid, you’d be okay in the morning."
"You should have no doubt, How things will work out, your present flight, you’ll be alright in the morning."
I enjoy all sorts of music – except for the head banging rock ones.
Instrumental - Driving to work most days, I play Kenny G (instrumental Sax) it keeps me calm and stops me from getting angry with people who trafficate after they have made a turning.
African Music – definitely at weekends. It’s very happy music and sort of wakes you up. This motivates me to do the housework at weekends, sort of puts me on "fast forward."
The Oldies – Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, The Carpenters. My mum liked the Carpenters and played it a lot. I sang along with the lyrics on the cover and before my Teens could sing most of the songs on my own.
Bollywood Music – I have the music from the movie Fanaa and others on my mobile. It’s funny that I can sing along as I’ve listened to them several times but, I don’t know what I’m saying (except for the fact that it’s a love song and sounds nice).
Xtian music – I like listening to in the mornings when I’m getting ready. The Integrity Collection is really nice.
Upbeat (RnB) – If I have my friends kids for the day. I play music they can dance to or sing along to if they are in the car.
So what does music do for you? Does it inspire you? Make you happy? Make you feel on top of the world? or do you actually like composing yours?
Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for reading.

Music is a very important part of the world. Music also helps you get through chores. I always have my Walkman when I cut the grass.
Playing music gives you a great feeling. You don't have to have a great talent for it; I'm probably one of the worst guitar players but I really enjoy it.
Music is a huge part of my life. From Classical, Jazz, R&B, Rock and even a little bit of Country, I love it all. I have some sort of music on all day. (Don't watch much TV, unless the World Cup is on!) :) Music can definitely set or change your mood. Thanks Lady E, Ciao!
I agree with your opinion, for me music is something that can make our lives more alive, by listening to music and playing music that can change our individual become a better person.
I couldn't imagine what the world would be without music. Thank you for this comprehensive hub.
Lady E , I am an absolute music psycho ! Rock , jazz , country and classical when I gotta chill out. I have a ridicuous CD collection. Big R&B guy here too !
Lady_E
Music does touch the soul. I see we enjoy similar genres. I enjoy Kenny G - he is good for a house full of company. A friend from Ghana recently downloaded some African Christian music I enjoy. there is not much music that I don't like... Music inspires me and moves me and teaches me. When I read your first sentence my thought was that a world without music would be lonely. great hub...

PS seeing me dance may have you running in fear !
:o)
This is a rater deep subject and has many ave. I have not fully researched. It is true that music can sooth and is mentioned in early biblical writings.
I have recently found a huge appreciation for Bollywood music. The stories it tells can be emotional and in particular I enjoy watching the traditional dancing that, on occassion acompanies it. The hand configurations have so many interesting meanings and require such precision to do properly.
Thank you for a thoughtful hub. I enjoyed it very much.
Lady E, Wonderful hub! Music is indeed medicine for the soul! “It is able to calm the agitations of the soul!” Music Therapy is very powerful! I agree there are many wonderful genres...
Music is all around us...
Music has always been an important vital part of our home! If you like Kenny G; I think you might like “Beyond the Walls” it is inspirational instrumental Gospel! Let me know what you think? You can listen free at Alpha7.org go to the Music Ministry! Great job! In HIS Love, Peace & Joy! Blessings!
Hello LadyE. You are so right, I cannot imagine life without music. It fills our need to express ourselves, like art does. It takes our cares away and brings joy to life.
It is said that "A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence." Beautiful hub on a beautiful subject.
Hi Elena! I always have music playing, it invigorates me and keeps me on a more even level emotionally. Most of my music is from long ago, but I will occasionally find myself enjoying contemporary rock, country or pop songs. I found it interesting that you included the music of the Carpenters among your preferences. I also thought Karen Carpenter had a rich, beautiful voice.
I think I read in one of Hypnodude's hubs that music was used to treat anxiety attacks. He said we are unable to feel anxiety while we are singing, and that is why soldiers are made to sing before going into battle.
Very nice hub, as always.
Mike
As life can not exist without water, heart can not get the nourishment of healing touch without music.
I always believe that music has a great healing touch Lady_E, just play some music in front of a lovely plant and see the effect next morning, human I think is more effected soul. Thanks for writing such a lovely one.
Forgot to say-I too enjoy old classical music.
I agree music has a way of picking up our sprits and making us happy. It relates to memories of special times and loved ones. Very enjoyable hub Lady_E---I absolutely love Luther Vandross; a beautiful voice that was silenced to soon...
When frustrated, I beat it out on the piano. Strange , this is when I sound the best, no mistakes and twists and turns not in the original music, making it fresh and new. I suppose it is because music is all about emotion.
Allthough I play violin and love classical etc. I thouroughly enjoy the boom boom wackety doom the kids bring home at times. Never had a real fancy for jaz, but lately it started growing onto me. Perhaps my taste first had to mature in some way to appreciate that.
Thanks for this nice piece of writing, analysing music in such a way, as we do not think about it. I enjoyed reading it.
Music is a delight and totally soothing. It matches well with certain experiences that we go through in life.
Oftentimes, music puts me on a par level with my creativity and also helps me study my books *hope I'm not sounding bizarre/weird?*... I mean, at most times, it brings out the best in me or I use it to wash out anger, pain, sadness, sorrow, etc. or to think about my loved ones *that's part of what it does*... Love composing songs especially raggae because you can equally use it to agitate for a just cause *miss Lucky Dube from South-Africa :-(*, gospel hip-hop, rap, etc. Composed 1 gospel hip-hop song last year, but, my voice isn't good, so, I abandoned it *you've got any remedy?*
I couldn't imagine not having music in my life - thanks for the hub.
I use Pink Floyd, among others, to put me in a mediatative trance which simplifies the noise and helps me to focus on writing:)!!
Very powerful and true hub and great one at that. I feel you completely. If the world didn't have music it would be a very boring, lifeless or we would experience a short life span. I love listening to good music and I love making music.
*Please let me know what you think of my work on the web. I have about 70+ ideas on the web however I have 100's of ideas in the works when I have (or make enough money) to complete them.
The music (myspace page) that comes on is one of my most relaxing ones. Tell me what you think of it. Be my guest.
http://www.myspace.com/deeluxishere
or just search for " KING DADDY DEE " on the web for more of my ideas. I even sell some of my music for ringtones.
Everything is very true about this hub!! Since you are a bollywood fan, I would suggest that you listen to some old Md.Rafi songs!! His songs will sway you off your feet and if you get the lyrics it will cast a spell that you would not like to come out off!! :)
You have given a true measure of what music can give to an individual. It can bring a smile and it can bring tears. It is soothing and can change the mood. So well written. Thank you so much!
Sister, this hub uplifted me a great deal and it is not because of how you wrote it but the power in it.Of course Music is a soul food and just like Bob Marley said
"One good thing about music, when it hit you, feel no pain so hit me with music"
That song by Mariah is highly inspirational but though i love soul musics, sentimental, blues and even pop yet Reggae and i mean contemporary ones like those of Bob's are my favorites and they always help me stay focused on the right track but then i love gospel and wish to dedicate these songs to you for this great hub.
Voted up and beautiful...
Nice hub Lady_E.
For me, music conjures up old memories, smells, old (and new) friends, and good times. It makes me want to party, to scream, to sing along. It heightens my emotional state of fun! From toe tapping, to dancing, ... I think we all need music. After all, our body's pulse with the rhythm of our heart-beat; one of natures many songs.
Thanks for this hub.
Totally enjoyed this! Music speaks to me on many levels. Thumbs up!
Hey, he sang in a few movies though I dont remember which ones!! His recitation is awesome, more because his father was a poet!! :)
I LOVE MUSIC!!!!! The Crysler Car Company were I bought my 2007 300M Touring thought I was crazy when I told them I don't want my car if my CD player isn't working right! lol, lol, lol, I was serious! I love your Hubs and you too!!! Blessings!
I have always loved music. I used to listen to the Top 40 countdown every week and record my favorite songs with my tapeplayer! Through my teens and college years, I listened to a lot of country and 80's rock music. Now I mostly listen to Christian music - conemporary as well as gospel. I love praise and worship music - it is so healing and uplifting to the soul!
I like classical, country, new age, jazz and gospel the most. I enjoy listening to older soul music too. Some of the new music I listen to (depends on who it is and their message). I love instrumental gospel music as well, love the gospel of the saxophone. Music does lift me when I'm feeling low and it brings fun times for me and my children; and yes it does inspire me. Whatever music I choose to listen to, it has to nourish and/or uplift me for the time I choose to listen to it. And as coffeesnob said, without music, the world would be a lonely place, as it brings comfort even when we hear it in our mind only. There are many artists I like (too many to name)- and some of whom there may be that one or two songs that I love by them and that's it. I also feel that way about certain preached messages--depending on my mood (and the preacher),I'll listen to a tape of their preaching and feel like I can now continue on.
I love music and it's something we do take for granted and yet always reach for it anytime we need to relax, be energized and on and on, great article on music healing and soothing the soul, it is good medicine!
I don't even WANT to imagine a world without music. What would be the point of existing? That's scary... I know that's a little dramatic. Good Hub!
I always love oldies, especially 70s music attracts me the most.Music bring back memories-this is so true,I don't know how it happens but when i listen to some of my fav. songs that I used to listen at my early ages,it takes me to enchanting moments of the past. So, you can say music sometimes help us to virtual time travel. Thanks Elena:)
Thanks for the advice, Lady_E... I'll catch up on it after school
Hi Lady_E
You almost lost me when you said "I enjoy all sorts of music – except for the head banging rock ones." LOL
Nah! A nice Hub and so true. Music keeps me going through life. Hard or mellow I listen to lots.
Funny things is though, that when I feel down I sometimes like downbeat music rather than happy tunes. It's as if I need to listen to something that dovetails with my mood at that moment.
Weird.
I feel every living thing has a song in them, even plants. This was a great hub, and a little funny as I just shut off my iPod to let it recharge...
YES THIS IS THE BEST HUB OF ALL TIME!!! WHY DO I KNOW THAT?
well I am epi-man - master musicologist - no one here at the pages of HUB comes close - believe me - and your hubs are like musical interludes - they heal and soothe me like no other ...... they are like that beautiful melody that you just can't get out of your head - and you keep humming and humming and humming!!!!
Best piece of music of all time: Prelude to act one - La Traviata by Verdi - check it out on you tube!
so true...music is life as it tends to heal any wound. Good topic!
thats the truth

I am a music fan also. My favorites are gospel and R&B, though I listen to and like many other genres. Gospel helps me feel connected to the spiritual energy of the universe and disconnect from my ego somewhat. I listen for my story in R&B. Thanks for your post.
