Music – My Drumming Lessons
63
♪ They say it’s good to have a hobby. Well, I enjoy writing, listening to music and I decided to try a new one recently – Drumming. I’ve always admired the way people sit down with a set of drums and give it a nice rhythm. I found out about FREE drumming lessons and decided “why not?”
.
First Impressions
I thought the Drum set looked pretty cool but wondered how and when I would be able to play it confidently. It was a weekday evening at 7pm, the place was already open, so I walked in. It was quiet, I took a quick photo of the drum set (right photo) and had already started to play with the set, when the teacher walked in. He was a Ghanaian, probably in his 40s and introduced himself. I proceeded to get up but he said it was okay and asked me to sit down so he could tell me the names of the drums and what they did. I took some notes. (trying to look intelligent)
.
My Experience
Well, it was like learning to drive all over again.
First step: I use one stick (right hand) to beat the bass drum infront of me.
Second step: I press my right foot down often, on a pedal which hits into a massive Drum. It makes a big “boom” sound and has to be in tune with the first step.
Third step: A challenge for me. This was using the left stick to beat they cymbals, while beating the bass drum, while using the pedal. All three had to be in tune. Once I had to do the 3rd step, my brain slowed down and couldn’t do all three at the same time. I thought we ladies could Multi task.
Teachers Patience
For the first two lessons, I still couldn’t proceed to doing all 3 at the same time and the teacher kept on encouraging me. He said I was doing well. Little did he know that was little encouragement as I use the same words to my students (at work) when they are not doing so well.
Anyway, my brain eventually clicked into the right gear and I got it. Now I have begun making a little progress. I’m not sure how long I’ll learn for as I have a busy schedule. That's me in the photo, I went straight to the lesson on my way from work, practicing on a different set of drums. The person who took it didn’t take a clear shot, but never mind me - look at the drums, it will help you understand the challenge I faced. (the massive drum with the big "boom" noise I hit with the pedal, is at the bottom right of the photo)
So, now I’ve got the basics – a few more months and I’ll be drumming for the Rollling Stones.
Do you play any musical instruments and was it easy to learn? It would be interesting to know. ٩(•̮̮̃•̃)۶

good for u, young lady,
if i may?
it was 1969 when of my uncles died, and left me 600.00 in united states saving bonds. I rec'd permission from my father, to buy a set of drums, (Blue) ones! just like yours. we were poor, so no money for lessons, just grateful to have the drums in the home, back bedroom, of course! :) i was told by an ole timer, to listen to "Wipe-Out" song, and the song "Wendy" then "Buddy Rich" over and over again, then start to play along with the songs/It Worked!
Loved It. Still do.
Enjoy it, great therapy!
thanks again for sharing, this brought back some great memories for me.
Wow, whatever next you are up to. Can I have photoes and signed. When you get famous I'll be all right. Seriously, well done and respect to you for atempting this. I admire anyone with art, like music, painting and so on. I find it fascinating when someone can do it.
It's always great to learn a new skill. Enjoy the drums.
I always admire anyone who can play a musical instrument--even a little. A dated a young lady who played the violin and she gave me a lesson once, but quickly seemed to decide it was more fun to go to the movies than teach me to play a violin. I'm afraid my musical success peaked with my mastery of the Mickey Mouse guitar I had as a child--it played with the help of a crank on its side.
Good like with the drums, I envy you!

I played a Sousaphone in college...drums are a great left-right brain exorcise, which sharpens your ability to focus on everyday tasks,so don't give up playing the drums Lady_E!;)
Lady, I know the excitement you feel. I sang, wrote and played guitar. My claim to fame was being booked as the opening act for Elton John and Jethro Tull.
I always saw the drums as a true physical talent. I wish you the best. Here's one thing to do, if you end up playing for crowds. Don't be scared! Look at the audiance and say to yourself. "YOUR MINE!" H
I've wondered what came of your Drumming lessons. Drumming takes a lot of coordination. Very admirable, Lady E. As a young boy, I took a year or so of piano lessons, but lost interest. It took too much time away from playing sports. Thanks Elena, Ciao!
Elena, wonderful new addition to your repertoire!! Keep on drumming!!
My daughter is better now and the fever is gone but she is yet to be back to pink health!! I am thankful to you for your concern and you understand the psychology too well because I know the bonding you share with your dad!! Thank you once again!! :)
Lady E you've got it in you. My brain eventually clicked in - try your heart it's got better rhythm- a beat (the heartbeat) which you can never lose!
Am very passionate to become a drummer. Shuku-ria for the guide. God bless you
Ahhh... I DO love music. And I'd love to be able to play. I've tried several instruments over the course of my life and had very little success with it. Nor can I sing. Musical ability is just not one of the blessings I've been given... unless you count the ability to whistle. I can do that quite well! :-)
Oh Wow. I always wanted to do that. I love music and love the drums. Plus it would just shock my kids if I suddenly started playing the drums, Ha Ha. but it could also inspire them. Just as you have inspired me. Very cool.
I love music .. I love drums too..but I can only. Thanks for this inspiration.
Good information. I have a friend as a teacher in music school. He is very talented person, he also share his knowledge to his student. I really proud with her job. Thanks for share us about this. My life so empty without music. Drum is also great music instrument. Drum give a soul and energy in music. Vote up.

Lady E, Playing an instrument is great therapy! My son plays the drums and luvs working with computers as well it’s a great contrast! Music has always been an integral part of our household! The drums bring a whole new dimension… It really helps to have a sense of rhythm.
The Blue looks heavenly! I bet you will really enjoy it! Go Lady E! Thank you for sharing, In His Love, Peace, Joy & Blessings!
Lady E I can't believe it! You drum as well! I had to laugh cos I used to once-upon-a-time - way back when The Rolling Stones had just begun!!!! Ouch, the admission so hurts! Especially as I never got to drum for them - like you might!!
Yes I do know how you must have felt first time - it IS so confusing, getting your feet and hands to do so many different things at once! Still, keep it up girl and record the results when Mick asks you for an audition! In fact, invite me to it please!
Great hub Lady E and thanks for making me remember the world of drumming - and making me giggle!
Interesting to hear of your experience with drumming. I don't think I could ever get 3 limbs doing different things at once. Not under control anyway. Good luck with your lessons I never have managed to play any instrument but it must be soo satisfying to be able to do so.
Lady_E, take a bow! People tend to think it is easy to learn how to play drums. But in fact it is very difficult. You’ve got to have an above-average sense for rhythm and able to do different things with each hand and foot simultaneously. I am an amateur musician on piano, keyboard, organ, piano-accordion and flute; I know the wonderful feeling of peace and contentment one experience while making music. Keep on drumming! Practice makes perfect. I’ve got to share a musical joke with you. Whenever you become a member of an orchestra, you will always hear announcements like: “Shall all musicians and drummers please come forward.” Never take this at heart, okay?
To think I played the violin as a child. :)
Good for you for pursuing something fun and creative! I think it sounds like tons of fun and I'm sure you'll continue to progress in leaps and bounds.
Lady E, Actually he enjoyed them early on and plays wonderfully... so the sound of the drums can be quite favorable he plays gospel, classical, contemporary, jazz...
Be encouraged and be patient with yourself! I believe you have GREAT rythum so don't give up perservere and you will see what I mean... Program yourself lol! Much love to you!
Good for you! Brave/courageous!! Wish you much success!!
No instrument playing here other than a little keyboard dating way back when mom gave me a mini one for Christmas, LOL! I know 'Mary Had a Little Lamb,' and part of the theme from the old series, 'Wagon Train,' and some of 'I Gave My Love a Cherry.' That's about it. I'll look forward to the invitation and have a front row to see you and Mick Jag/Rolling Stones, should be very... 'satisfying!' A drum-roll vote-up/rated!
Wonderful hub. You must be doing so well with your drumming. God Bless You Dear Heart.

Good luck with your drumming lessons. I am always little slow understanding how musical instruments function,at my school days I used to watch my friends playing guitar and always wondered how they keep everything in tune.Hope to get more free drumming lessons from you in future. Good luck :)
