Russian Super models are dominating the world of fashion. From the age of 10 to 18, lots of girls dream of glamorous lives and high earnings as international models. There is a big market for it and it’s very enticing to the poor.

Aleksy Vasiliev is claimed to be Russia's top model scout. He discovered: supermodels Vodianova and Olga Kurylenko the Bond girl in Quantum of Solace. He tries to catch them young as early as the age of 14. However, there are some aspects of this job the young ladies need to take into consideration.

Olga Kurylenko

Anorexic Model

Dangers

  • Escorting – Ladies could be hired as Models but asked to do Escorting Jobs.
  • Prostitution - (under the disguise of Escorting) which earns them a lot of money. Lots of Teenagers are falling prey to this.
  • The pressure to be Thin – then becoming an anorexic. Some Agencies want models who are super slim, so there is the pressure to lose weight and not eat so much.
  • Depression and loneliness - From the little research I have done, it seems these young models have no one to turn to and end up committing suicide. They don’t seem to have people who really care for their mental well being and because they live “in another world” they don’t know how to handle depression. (The negative thoughts in their minds are probably stronger and take over)

** Ruslana Korshunova - A Super Model, took a plunge from her luxury apartment in Manhattan in - June 2008.” (First photo) She was only 20. It has been suggested that the model may have been depressed and desperate to get out of the fashion industry but wasn’t given the freedom to by some underworld bosses who manage the Russian models. A message she posted on a Social Network website read: "I'm so lost. Will I ever find myself?"

** Tom Nicon - Face of Burberry took his life at the start of the Milan men’s fashion week this June 2010. The 22-year-old attended a fitting for Versace one morning and was due at a meeting with his agency, Success, but never arrived. He was found dead after jumping 40ft from a window.

Tom Nicon

So many more: including Kamasutra model Viveka Babaji who also killed herself in June 2010.

Please don’t get me wrong. Models are lovely but I feel they are very vulnerable. So please if you are in this job or considering it - Exercise caution. If you travel, ensure your passport is always in your possession. It doesn't have to be kept by "the manager". Stay close to family and friends. Ensure you get time off to spend with them. If they are far away keep in touch regularly.

✰♡* The dream maybe attractive, but the price may not be worth paying *♡✰

Noémie Lenoir

French Model – Noémie Lenoir is one of my favourite models. Sadly, she tried to commit suicide a few weeks ago too, but thankfully she survived. For those who live in UK, you will notice her in the Marks and Spencer Ads.

Thank you for shedding a grey light on the Modeling industry...there seems to be a wall of misleading information and elusive truth to this subject.

Great article and so sad. I hope it brings attention to the problems these models are having so that maybe they can get some help before they give in to depression and suicide.

DeBorrah K. Ogans 22 months ago

Lady E, Great job! Well presented informative article! However quite sad! Modeling is a difficult profession...

It is clear that the well being of the models are quite often overlooked! It is so important that they remain connected to someone who sincerely cares for them. As you say "Stay close to family and friends..."

Hopefully the agents that represent them will begin to realize that they have a responsibility to these models. This is not like an ordinary job! They need to make sure that their emotional needs are a being addressed and are a priority! Establishing a support system is important!

Thank you for sharing, In HIS Love, Peace & Blessings!

Hello, hello, 22 months ago

It is unbelievable because if you see them looking glamorous and also living the high life. It is so sad but is there which makes them do it?

Have been hearing some horror stories about the modeling industry. It's good that you put an insight onto this. Makes good reading.

Happy Sunday all!!

Thanks so much for stopping and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated. As Deborrah Ogans put it. "the well being of the models are quite often overlooked! It is so important that they remain connected to someone who sincerely cares for them."

Best Wishes everyone, Elena. xx

*** Wrath Warbone - thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoy reading my poems at Wordpress. I enjoy writing them, they come straight from the heart and may come across as "deep", but I need to get it out of my system. lol Kind Regards. xx

When physical beauty is your "product" the dangers will always be real--no matter if you are a model, an escort or a prostitute. Please understand I am not saying models, escorts and prostitutes are the same--only that they share similar physical and psychological dangers. On the surface one would think that if a beautiful woman's job is simply to be beautiful, well--it should be easy. It is clearly more complex than that. I echo the sentiments of Deborrah Ogans in suggesting models stay anchored to someone who truly cares.

A very thoughtful hub, Elena. Thanks.

Elena, there are three choices before russian women!! To do modelling with all its vice, play tennis or marry a foreigner with a wealthy background!! Your hub is timely highlight of the present Russian society and its bankruptcy!!

Even in India, you hear models commit suicide the every other day!! Lust for money when you are educationally ill equiped and the touch of voyeurism along with the so called glamour is a vice ruining many a beautiful life!!

Great work!!

:)

Lady_E 22 months ago

@ Mike - Interesting comments. "the product being the beauty". Thanks for sharing more insight on the topic.

Best Wishes.

@ Dreamreachout - Aaawh, that's so sad. It reminds me of a conversation I had with someone. He told me that in UK, people are assigned to those who win Millions in our lottery - Psychologists (something like that). So, they are equipped for the new lifestyle. Looking back, I hardly hear of someone who won the lottery here committing suicide. Thanks for sharing those comments.

Regards.

I always wondered if my son made the right choice when he refused a modeling agent's offer to model. Now, after reading this, I'm glad he had his priorities in order. I didn’t realize the pressure was so great in all areas of their life. It’s unfortunate that these beautiful young people thought death was the only way out.

Cheers & blessings :o)

Lady_E 22 months ago

Hi Nancy, so someone gorgeous is hiding behind your Avatar. Wow, your son got an offer to model. Ah well, I'm sure he is doing well in whatever career he has chosen. I suppose he could still do it part-time. With the little I know about you, I'm sure you'll keep his feet firmly on the ground. Best Wishes. x

The real sad thing is that there are human beings out there that want to take advantage of young girls when they're most vulnerable. For money....Sick!!! Lady E, your suggestions to stay connected to family and friends keeps these girls grounded. But, unfortunately these models are literally held hostage. Thanks, all the best!

K9keystrokes 22 months ago

Wow. Such beauty among such horror. If only we could manage a way to measure these lovely womens' emotions visually. So many are willing to cast aside the humanity we are born with to arrive heavey handed thick with cash. It is a desease needing the bandages ripped away to expose the wound raw and angry. Your hub has put an exclaimation point on the topic, one I so wish could be driven deep in the hearts of the dark souls who trade in this industry in such a dispicable manner. Really good job here Lady_E.

lorlie6 22 months ago

I recently watched a documentary of the modeling life and it was very, very sad. Lady_E, this hub is a fitting warning to girls out there who are not seeing the 'big picture,' they DO need to stay in close contact with their families and never should they give up passports, etc.

Thanks for such an important hub.

billyaustindillon 22 months ago

Nice hub I remember seeing a documentary about the modeling - prostitution rings in Moldova - horrible and very scary. Seems like it hasn't stopped at all.

FGual 22 months ago

Hello LadyE. Good for you for exposing what is behind the veil of beauty and glamour, which is sadly neither. How horrible that a young beautiful human being, with most of their life ahead of them, would choose to check out. Sad.

Lady_E 22 months ago

@ Jai - Cheers Jai. It is unfortuanate that a lot of them are held hostage - even mentally. Thanks for stopping.

@ K9Keystrokes - Deep comments, glad you stopped by. Regards.

@ Hi Lorlie - that's true, a lot don't see the big picture. (not aware of what goes on beind the scenes). Lovely to see you again.

@ Hello Billy, what a pity. In such situations, it's so hard for them to get out. I watched a documentary sometime ago too and it was one of the clients of the brothel that helped a lady out because he felt sorry for her. Hmmmh. Thanks for your comments.

@ Hi FGual - how are you? It's sad they check out so early but hopefully others will learn and avoid the pitfalls. Regards.

Support Med. 22 months ago

This is really sad. So many suicides. I'm glad Ms. Lenoir is still alive and I hope she gets the help she needs. Voted-up/rated.

Lady_E 22 months ago

Thanks Support Med - I'm glad she is fine too. It's strange you look at beautiful, glamourous women and think they have it all....

Lovely to read from you. :)

platinumOwl4 22 months ago

This is great a hub. Unfortunately, many models both male and female become blind by the artificial light. This has caused many to seek comfort in some sort of an addiction. The French model Noemie Lenoir attempted suicide, tragic. The pressure of being a model most take its toll on a person. People you are unfamiliar with attempting to take advantage of you at every turn. I have compassion for people who are in entertainment. There are wolves in every corner. Accountants, agents, even would be companions, can often reveal themselves as wolves in sheep clothing. The story is a long one. Every entertainer should read what happen to others prior to entering the business.

hubpageswriter 22 months ago

I'm sure there are more to these stories than we know. Hopefully detectives and whoever work on these cases will find out the root of the problems fast so that there will be no more suicides. A tall order, but something has to be done quick.

Lady_E 22 months ago

** Hello platinumowl - people should take the advice in your last sentence and do some more research. Thanks for sharing your comments.

** Hubpages writer - I also hope some positive action is taken, particularly for their mental well being.

Regards.
